That was the topic of conversation over the weekend when Cheryl Chumley, author of “Police State USA: How Orwell’s Nightmare is Becoming Our Reality,” visited with Gov. Mike Huckabee on his Fox News program.
Huckabee noted the case of a toddler in Florida who had half his face blown off by a flash-bang grenade launched by a SWAT team. And he raised questions about a lawsuit in Evansville, Indiana, in which officers smashed through a front door belonging to a 68-year-old and threw flash-bang grenades to serve a search warrant.
“This is all part of a larger question,” Chumley said. “Not just are our police departments becoming militarized, but are we becoming a ‘Police State USA’?” she said, noting the weaponized agents for the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies.
Huckabee played a video of SWAT team members making jokes about using their 50-pound battering ram to go through a 10-pound pane of glass in a search they conducted.
“Have we crossed a line in same areas with the militarization of police?” he asked.
“There’s a simple solution,” said Chumley, “When you kill somebody innocent, kill or maim a toddler, then you just go the next day with business as usual using the same military-type equipment, that’s where we should be drawing the line.”
She said people can help curb the militarization of police departments by persuading those who fund agencies not to allow money for the acquisition and maintenance of weapons of war.

She also suggested the implementation of rules allowing the use of armored vehicles only in certain circumstances.
The discussion came after a week of violence in Ferguson, Missouri, in protest of the police shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Police from several agencies, including the National Guard, have been unable to stop the riots and violence.
Chumley has asked, “What ever happened to the old ‘serve and protect’ model and mantra of civilian policing?”
Her
book argues the notion of God-given rights is being replaced by
government control. Privacy rights are crumbling along with Fourth
Amendment guarantees that protect citizens from warrantless searches,
she said.
Rep.
